Many of us ask this question: What are my values? - Primarily when you focus on creating your personal brand. Or simply just trying to figure out who you are.
I believe identifying your values is essential so you can live your most authentic life.
What are values?
Values are fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate attitudes and actions. They help determine what is important to us. Values describe the personal qualities we choose to embody, the sort of person we want to be, how we treat ourselves and others, and our interaction with the world around us.
Where do values come from?
To come up with a list of your values, you may need to do a self-audit and list all values you have experienced or feel important. Once you have this list, think back if your actions reflect these values. How you have behaved will reflect your values.
They come from the way you were raised. Think back to how your parents raised you, the cultural values you experienced growing up. There may be values you don't want to pursue in your life, and that is ok. The opposite of that value may be one of your values.
Think back to the education you received. Are there any values school taught you that still feel right to you?
Here are some other questions to raise:
What do you spend your time on the most?
What behavior makes you angry?
When do you feel the happiest?
What are you passionate about?
What makes you proud?
Another way to come up with a list to choose from is to look at the people you admire. What values your role models possess that you feel you resonated with?
Knowing your values is the road to understanding yourself. We make choices based on our values that will build our character.
Values can change overtime. Significant life events - like a Pandemic tend to help (or force) us to re-evaluate what we consider important.
Here is the list of my Values.
Authenticity - Be true to yourself! Practice what you preach! Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself.
"I know of nothing more valuable when it comes to the all-important virtue of authenticity than simply being who you are."
- Charles R. Swindoll
Culture - Sense of belonging! Culture is the invisible bond that ties people together.
"A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people."
- Mahatma Gandhi
Respect - Accept other people, despite their difference in background or beliefs from your own. Embracing diversity makes life extraordinary and experiences more meaningful.
"When you practice gratefulness, there is a sense of respect toward others."
- Dalai Lama
Growth - Growth = change; change = growth and change is inevitable. Change has to come within. Look for opportunities to grow as a person and to help others succeed, too. Make it happen. That's all there is to it. You choose your destiny.
"Change is inevitable. Growth is optional."
- John Maxwell
Passion - A willingness to suffer for what you love!
"There comes a time when you ought to start doing what you want. Take a job that you love. You will jump out of bed in the morning. I think you are out of your mind if you keep taking jobs that you don't like because you think it looks good on your resume. Isn't that a little like saving up sex for your old age?"
- Warren Buffett
Integrity - Choosing your actions based on values rather than a personal gain!
"When you commit, do so with the clear understanding that you're pledging your integrity.
- Stephen Covey
Fitness - If your body is healthy, your mind is healthy. To enjoy the glow of good health, we must exercise.
"Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live."
- Jim Rohn
Now it's your time to start brainstorming, making lists, prioritizing your values, and setting value-driven goals.
